Hozugawa Boat Ride
Kumamoto is located around the center of Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four main islands. There, one can find a beautiful waterfall, “Nabeketaki,” that can be viewed from the back as well as from the front.
With a height of 9 meters and width of 20 meters, the waterfall is impressive. But a short walk under the overhanging rock underneath the falls reveals a different and rare glimpse of the power, beauty, and music of Nabeketaki. It is a sight so gorgeous it has been used in television commercials. The falls appear to be a drapery of water; together with the deep green of the trees and rays of sunshine, the water seems to have magical healing powers. Surely the scene can be appreciated by every visitor.
In a special event in early spring, a light installation is particularly delightful.
From JR Kumamoto Station, take the JR Hohi Main Line to Aso Station (about 90 minutes).
From Aso Station, take the Sanko Bus going to Tsuetate Onsen and get off at Yu Station (about 1 hour). From Yu station take a taxi to Nabeketaki (15 minutes).
