Sakura Furusato Square was established as a place for people to commune with Inbanuma's natural environment, and to promote international goodwill. Sakura and the Netherlands have a relationship that stretches back to the Edo period, with Sakura said to be an eastern counterpart to Nagasaki in the west. Due to this historic association the Sakura Japan-Netherlands Society was formed, and cultural exchanges continue to this day. Furusato Square features windmills brimming with Dutch atmosphere, including Japan's first water-drawing windmill, "De Liefde," which was built in 1994 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the municipal organization.
